The art of listening. No student graduates from NEOUCOM without intensive training in the communication skills needed to be an outstanding doctor. Patient-centered care begins with patient-centered caring. Patients want health care professionals who listen well and have the communication skills needed to be good care providers. They want doctors who take time to understand their concerns and needs and who are empathetic and compassionate. We understand the connection between effective communication and effective medical treatment and health. Students progress in communication skill development through a program of instruction, evaluation and practice. They experience standardized patient training through the William G. Wasson, M.D., Center for Clinical Skills Training, Assessment and Scholarship, then perfect their communication skills at the bedside, with patients in hospital and community settings under the guidance of some of the region's most experienced and respected practicing physicians. |
