MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR:On behalf of the faculty, staff and graduate students of the Department of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences, please accept my welcome and invitation to learn more about our department and what we do. As of April 6, 2009, the former Departments of Community Health Sciences and Behavioral Sciences at NEOUCOM merged to form our new department, dedicated to research, teaching and service in the fields of public health, preventive medicine, behavioral sciences, medical sociology, bioethics and medical humanities. Our mission statement below defines how we see ourselves and the work we do. We are also home to some very strong programmatic offices, including Ohio's Region III Area Health Education Center (AHEC) , the administrative offices of the Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master of Public Health (CEOMPH) Program, strong educational Offices of Geriatric Medicine and of Palliative Care, and a unique Office of Public Health Practice that is home to the first-in-the-nation academically affiliated departments of public health. We proudly sponsor the William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition, open to medical student poets, and provide a Certificate Program in Bioethics for medicine and pharmacy students. Faculty in our department provide training for medicine and pharmacy students; graduate students in public health, social and behavioral sciences; and medical residents through our affiliate hospitals. Our faculty teach in a required interprofessional curriculum in population health taught for all medical and pharmacy students at NEOUCOM, the IMPACTS Project. Our support staff and graduate students are integral to the success of the department, and provide a tremendous amount of work to enhance the efforts of our faculty and program offices. They have my unending gratitude for their efforts. If you have questions about the department, please contact Ann Williams, Administrative Coordinator, at 330-325-6110 or awwillia@neoucom.edu. You may also contact me through Cyndi Dubbert, Administrative Coordinator, at 330-325-6177 or csd@neoucom.edu, or you are welcome to e-mail me directly at shull1@neoucom.edu. Thank you for your interest in our exciting and innovative department. Sharon K. Hull, MD, MPH
