Human health depends on myriad physical, psychological, and societal factors. Physicians therefore must comprehend and manage the complex interplay among biological, behavioral, and social sciences to provide quality patient care. These facts focus the mission of the Department of Behavioral Sciences on educating medical students and conducting research in the health sciences to ultimately improve and promote the health of the public.

In its teaching activities, the department faculty assist medical students to develop the biotechnical skills, psychosocial sensitivity and cultural competence that they need to become successful and satisfied physicians. The faculty concentrate their teaching in areas of the curriculum devoted to medical psychology, medical sociology, medical ethics and medical humanities. Fusing the behavioral and social sciences with the humanities grounds students in the complex interplay of these disciplines in patient care and health outcomes. Research and scholarly activities are focused on professional socialization, ethical knowledge, and career development of physicians and health psychology.
